MONDAY MORNING EXPERT: GLO (GHANA) PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH DAY 19 IN FIGURES

Match Day 19 will go down as a Match Day of interesting officiating. Perhaps the six-week break will allow the Referees Association of Ghana to take a look at how their members have been faring.

SOME MATCH DAY HIGHLIGHTS

LENCLAY [AshantiGold 1-0 Hearts of Oak]: Back from suspension, Sammy Adjei could not save Hearts of Oak from a determined AshantiGold. The Obuasi based club who had been reportedly deserted by their coach, David Duncan, had to rely on directions from deputy coach Camara Dini to clinch a much needed 3 points from Hearts of Oak. But Hearts fans were not happy with referee Awal Mohammed. The fans felt that AshantiGold midfielder Alhaji Sannie had passed the ball to Samson Cudjoe who was in an offside position before beating goalkeeper Sammy Adjei only for Daniel Asamoah to tap in a goal-bound ball. Adjei was later replaced by Philemon McCarthy, the third goalkeeper they had tried in 2 games.

ROBERT MENSAH, CAPE COAST [Dwarfs 1-2 Medeama SC]: Referee Mercy Tagoe Quarcoo did not have a good day at Cape Coast. She dished out one penalty too many and on one occasion appeared to have given Dwarfs a penalty just to appease the home fans. Referee Tagoe’s faults aside, it was Kotoko-reject Kabiru Imoro who shot the away team into the lead with a cheeky goal. The rest of the goals were penalties. Kwame Frimpong Pele was probably the brightest spot in the Dwarfs squad, while goalkeeper Musa Tijani was in good form for Medeamma SC. Seidu Bansi would feel he could have contributed more had he scored from the penalty and taken all the chances that fell his way.

BABAYARA, KUMASI [Kotoko 3-1 B. A. Stars]: Kotoko did not have any mercy for the relegation-bound B.A. Stars whatsoever.  The Brong Ahafo team controlled the game in the first half after Prince Atakora Gyimah scored what might go down as the fastest goal this season. Against the run of play however,  back-to-form striker Samed Oppong and central defender Awal Mohammed killed off any hopes B. A. Stars had of picking points at Baba Yara. The brightest spot of the day was Kotoko midfielder Albert Bruce.

ACCRA SPORTS STATIUM [Mighty Jets 1-0 Aduana]: Title defenders were livid with Referee Solomon Mordey for denying them what they felt was a good goal. On the day however, it was veteran Winfred Dormon whose broke the deadlock by connecting to a well taken corner kick. Aduana goalkeeper could do little about that goal.

KPANDU PARK [Heart of Lions 1-0 King Faisal]: King Faisal players and officials left Kpandu angry! Referee Zakari had disallowed a supposedly good goal they had scored. Meanwhile, they strongly felt that Heart of Lions should not have been credited with their goal as the whole circumference of the ball did not cross the goal line. But the referee saw it differently and allowed Badu Asiamah’s goal to stand.

CARL REINDORF, DANSOMAN [Liberty 2-0 Edubiase]: This was the surprise victory of the day. The talking point of the day was the performance of young defender Alfred Nelson of Liberty professionals. Nelson’s performance left critics rearranging their notes. Many had wondered why Herbert Addo will ignore the several experienced defenders in the league include the young Nelson in his squad, but the lad stepped up to the challenge against one of the best teams this season.
