WHAT IS AT STAKE?
Group B of the African Youth Championships has been thrown into some interesting mathematical possibilities after the first round of games.
Cameroon will advance to the semi-finals and qualify for the U-20 World Cup if they defeat Nigeria and Ghana fails to beat Gambia. The Gambia themselves must not lose to Ghana and pray or else they are eliminated. Even then, they have to hope Nigeria doesn’t lose to Cameroon.
Now Ghana cannot afford a loss to The Gambia today. If they do, their chances of qualification, while not dead, will be reduced to near impossible. Whatever the outcome of the Gambia-Ghana game, Ghana should hope that Nigeria loses to Cameroun.
Nigeria will play Cameroun before Ghana faces Gambia. Both sides need a win to advance to the semi-finals and qualify for the U-20 World Cup. However Nigeria’s chances will be brighter if Gambia fails to defeat Ghana.
