GLO (GHANA) PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH DAY 27 IN FIGURES – CHELSEA WINS IT

Berekum Chelsea are winners of Ghana’s Glo Premier League.

Sometime last season, I began to question whether the Hearts of Oak-Kotoko hegemony has been broken. I asked whether teams from Brong-Ahafo region are taking over the Ghanaian league. Berekum Chelsea’s title win this season is the clearest indication of the shifting dynamics of Ghana’s prestigious ‘Top Four’. There is a new king in town. Chelsea’s league win should send clear signals to every student of the game that investment into a good technical team and quality players cannot be left to chance. Students of the game will further learn that fortifying your home ground, winning a third of your away games and minimising the losses is a sure bet league winning formula.

Credible Continental Contenters?

Now the big question is whether Berekum Chelsea is competitive enough to mount a credible African Champions League challenge. In competition with his peers at the African Youth Cup, Berekum Chelsea coach Orlando Wellington proved to be tactically inferior. Also,  a CHAN team, dominated by these Berekum Chelsea players were just terrible on the African scene earlier this year. With such a not-too-interesting history, all eyes will be on the sort of African challenge they will mount. For now though, they deserve their crown. Football made in Ghana congratulates the entire Berekum Chelsea set up!

Relegation Blues

The relegation battle is far from over. B.A. Stars are essentially out, but any two of  Real Tamale United, Berekum Arsenals, Mighty Jets and All Stars could be relegated if they slip in the remaining two games. With B.A stars relegated, They will be an easy target for Real Tamale United in Tamale. But the Tamale team will have to hope for Mighty Jets’ possible home loss to Kotoko (who must win to have a chance of playing in the CAF Confederations Cup) and an improbable Berekum Arsenal loss to winners Berekum Chelsea, who might play with no motivation at all. Meanwhile, with the CAF Confederation slot (second position) still available for grabs, King Faisal’s home game with Esubiase and Wa All Stars’ away game to AshantiGold will have more at stake than just relegation deciders. Clearly, Real Tamale United and Berekum Arsenals are clearly looking good to get a relegation breather next Match Day.
