Finally, Ghanaian football fans can smile about something in 2011!
We congratulate Coach Akwasi Appiah, the backroom staff and the entire playing body of the Black Meteors for making Ghana proud at the 2011 All African Games.
Here is a team that was completely written off following their failure to quality for the London 2012 Olympics. Their case was worsened after flopping at the West African Football Union (WAFU) Championships 2011. They had to fight tooth and nail to overcome the Nigerian challenge in order to get to the All African Games. Having qualified, they were met with numerous challenges; including theft allegations and losing their first game.
These difficulties seemed to have motivated Akwasi Appiah and his boys to fight for the ultimate. And their effort was rewarded with the coveted gold medal. This generation of players have proven that dominating Africa in 2009 was no fluke.
Earlier on, Kuku Dadzie’s Black Princesses were denied gold by their Cameroonian counterparts. However they still deserve great commendations for picking silver at the championships.
While these performances may not put to bet those mind-bending questions about the competence of Ghanaian coaches and the abilities of Ghanaian players, they may bring a much needed respite from the barrage of insults thrown at local coaches and players in recent years.
