Ghana Glo Premier League Match Day 7 Preview: Return of Ghana’s Bitterest Rivalry

Accra Hearts of Oak, with the best defense as at Match Dy 7 of the 2011/2012 season

ASHANTIGOLD SC – TEMA YOUTH

Both clubs have won only once in 6 games with just 4 goals scored. Defensively, even though Tema Youth have not won a single game on the road, they have a stronger defense than AshantiGold. With such poor farms, one is tempted to predict a drawn game, but AshantiGold will have the home advantage and could have a narrow win.

BECHEM UTD – MEDEAMA SC

Bechem Utd have become the whipping boys of the season. This game will be Medeama’s opportunity to pick some cheap three points. Bechem’s problem has always been more in defense than in offence. Given that Medeama can be very disappointing on the road, they might just be shocked by some of the very good forwards at Bechem Utd.

HEART OF LIONS – LIBERTY PROFESSIONALS

Heart of Lions beat Liberty by 1-0 courtesy a Gilbert Fiameyo strike when they met at Kpandu Park last season. This season, Lions have struggled to score goals even at home. Liberty have on the other hand proven beyond all doubt that they have the materials to convert their chances into goals. If Liberty will repeat last week’s performance, then they stand a greater chance of taking all the three points at stake.

ARSENALS – ADUANA STARS

Time was when this regional derby will be the talk of the town. Last season, when they met, Aduana took the lead through Joseph Mugri before the home side forced a draw courtesy a Bennet Ofori equalizer. This season, Aduana may seem to be yards ahead of Arsenals, but these derby games defy form guide. I expect both teams to cancel each other out in a drawn game with goals.

WASSAMAN UTD – DWARFS

Even though Dwarfs can be wasteful in front of goal, they would not need to be at their best to see off Wassaman who have not proven their readiness for top flight football.

EDUBIAS FC – BEREKUM CHELSEA

This game is too close to call. But, there are statistical reasons to believe that the defending champions (Chelsea) will give Edubuiase a tough fight. First, both teams have scored 8 goals this season. Whereas 4 players have contributed the 8 goals for Chelsea, only one player has scored all 8 for Edubiase showing the depth Chelsea brings to this game. If Chelsea are to mark Emmanuel Baffuor out of the game, Edubiase will struggle to take points from this game.

Additionally, Berekum Chelsea have not lost an away game this season which increases the threat the pose to Edubiase. The title holders may be behind Edubiase on the league log, but they have conceded less goals which speaks volumes on their defensive prowess. Last season when they met, Steven Manu grabbed a brace to give Edubiase a home win. So, Chelsea might want to go into this game with vengeance in mind.

ACCRA HEARTS OF OAK – KUMASI ASANTE KOTOKO

Much will be said about this game. Mind games will be played. Referees will be blamed for the outcome of this game even before it begins. But every Hearts vs Kotoko game is to be won by whichever team is most motivated. The historical trends, form guide and statistics count for nothing. Those 3 points to be won do not matter as much as the bragging rights at stake. Its Hearts of Oak’s centenary year in which they are not paying particularly well.  Kotoko look like they in a good enough form to destroy the Hearts party. But can they?
