Glo Ghana Premier League – Match Day 5 Summary and Statistics

Emmanuel Clottey grabbed a brace on Match Day 5

[1] MATCH DAY 5 SUMMARY

With five days to their centenary celebrations, Accra Hearts of Oak have jumped to the top of the league table. Some of the most interesting scorlines were recorded on Match Day 5. Particularly, the 1-4 thrashing of Wassaman Utd on their own home grounds by the defending champions Berekum Chelsea is worth mentioning. After Match Day 5, 55% of all games had been won at home, 20% away and 25% have ended up in draws. Away teams still trail home teams in goals scored by 21 goals i.e 49-28.  Kotoko remain the top offensive team with an average of 2 goals per game. Hearts of Oak on top of the defense chart with just 1 goal conceded in 5 games. Hearts of Oak, Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Ebusua Dwarfs have not lost a game this season while Bechem Utd have not won a game. Emmanuel Clottey entered the goal king race in style, scoring a brace to put pressure on Emmnauel Baffuor’s 6 goals.

Ghana Glo Premier League: Match Day 3 Summary and Statistics

 [1] MATCH DAY 3 SUMMARY

This week, it was Bechem Utd who sought to spoil the mounting joy of Asante Kotoko, but it was not to be as Ivorian import Ahmed Toure scored what may be the most important brace of the season.

So far, of the 24 games played, 558.3% have resulted in home wins. 20.8% of the games have been won away with an equal proportion resulting in draws. New Edubiase striker Emmanuel Baffuor added a goal to his tally this week. He now leads the goal king chart with 5 goals in 3 games. Asante Kotoko have moved to the top of the league table with 7 points while Bechem Utd languish at the bottom with no points.

Defending champions Berekum Chelsea, Tema Youth, Liberty and Wassaman have failed to score in 2 of the 3 games played so far. Kotoko has the best attack; scoring 2.3 goals per game. Kotoko also lead in goal supremacy (i.e goal difference per game) with an average goal surplus of 1.3 per game. Aduana and Hearts of Oak have the best defense so far; conceding only once this season. Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko, Berekum Chelsea and Dwarfs have not lost a game this season, while Bechem Utd have not won a single game so far.

Ghana Glo Premier League Match Day 3 Preview: Can Edubease, Hears and All Stars Be Stopped?

Ghana Glo Premier league is building up momentum. This far, only 3 (18.75%) of all games played gave been won away from home. These games were won by Hearts of Oak, Edubiase and Wa All Stars. These three teams go into tough duels this weekend. Will they be able to maintain their winning form?

MIGHTY JETS – WASSAMAN

Jets are yet to register a win this season. They have scored just two goals this far, conceding three. What is worse? They are having both managerial and coaching difficulties. Wassaman have on the other hand been steered by the Legendary Herbert Addo to an interesting scoring run, with 4 goals to boast of. On club morale and scoring form alone, Wassaman may appear to be favourites for this encounter. I however see Mighty Jets taking all the points from this game with a narrow win.

MEDEAMA – LIBERTY PROFESSIONALS

Liberty, the scientific soccer lads, will seek to worsen the woes of the free-falling Medeama. The last time these two teams met in the Glo Premier League, Medeama won the day with Adam Kassim and Kabiru Imoro on target before goalkeeper Daniel Adjei scored a consolation penalty. During the pre-season G-8 Tournament, Medeama beat Liberty 3-1. Mohammed Tanko and Hans Kwoffie scored for Medeama and Camara Ibrahima goat one back for Liberty. But all is not well at Medeama. Their talisman coach Bashir Hayford is virtually being forced out of the team and many of their players are injured. Should they overcome these constraints, Medeama will be clear favourites for this encounter. Even though Sixteen-year old Liberty striker Zuberu Fuseini is likely to be a thorn in Medeama’s flesh, I expect a drawn game with goals.

TEMA YOUTH – ADUANA

Last week, when they travelled to Wa to play All Stars, Tema Youth could have won by a huge goal margin if they converted their chances. At home this week against one of the most defensive sides, Tema Youth will have to cut down on their wastefulness if they are to avoid another loss. I however cannot see Aduana going pass Tema Youth at Tema. I predict a narrow home win for Tema Youth

ASHANTIGOLD – WA ALL STARS

When they met last season, AshantiGold would have carried the day had Daniel Asamoah not missed a penalty. A wounded AshantiGold, whose egos were terribly bruised last week by Asante Kotoko, would want to vent their anger on visiting All Stars. On the part of All Stars, talisman winger Frank Sarfo Gyamfi and striker Adinan Saeed picked knocks against Tema Youth last season. It is unclear if they will start at Lenclay. Without these players, AshantiGold may just record a narrow win if Coach Zdravko Logarusic finds an answer to their goal drought. Watch out for Wa All Stars striker Joshua Otoo though, he can pull a surprise.

BECHEM UTD – ASANTE KOTOKO

Bechem Utd’s coach, Villislav Bogdanovic, picked a fine time to quit with the boisterous Kotoko coming to town. Even when their coach was in charge, Bechem Utd managed 2 goals, one of which was a penalty. With such a poor run, I cannot see Bechem Utd having enough fire power to stop Kotoko. Maybe Bechem forward Eric Fordjuor will give the Kotoko defense a couple of troubling moments, but not enough to stop the Fabulous team’s forward match. Michael Anaba, formerly of Gamba All Blacks who came to limelight with some stellar performances for Windy Professionals during last season’s FA Cup will be the player to watch for Asante Kotoko.

HEART OF LIONS – DWARFS

Paa Kwesi Fabin’s return to Lions as coach has not started on the whirlwind fashion he might have dreamt of. But Dwarfs does not have the material to unsettle his side on home grounds. The Dwarfs attack is inefficient and has had to depend on penalty calls to score 66% of their goals so far this season. Encounters between Dwarfs and Lions are however always tough. Last season, it took the magic of Gilbert Fiamenyo to overturn a game that had a draw written all over it. This week, I think Heart of Lions will have an easier time beating Dwarfs.

BEREKUM ARSENALS – EDUBIASE

Arsenals need to find their confidence on the pitch or they may have to forget about contending for any respectable place this season. When they met Edubiase last season, they had striker Nana Poku who scored a hattrick before Emmanuel Baffuor pulled one back. This time, Edubisae is clearly above Arsenal in class. I believe this Edubiase team has enough about it to see off Berekum Arsenal.

HEARTS OF OAK – BEREKUM CHELSEA

Easily my pick of the week! This game should be a cracker if Hearts of Oak players find their rhythm. Abdul Basit, who is on some lethal form this season, opened the scoring when both sides met last season. It took a moment of magic from out-of-favour striker Edwin ‘Pele’ Osei to save the blushes of Hearts of Oak. The picture may not be different this season. Both clubs have been active in the transfer market and are looking for the perfect blend of players. Tactically, I can see both teams cancelling each other. The game has a draw with goals all over it. However, Berekum Chelsea has more player who can win the game on their own than does Hearts.

Ghana Glo Premier League: Match Day 2 Summary and Statistics

[1] MATCH DAY 2 SUMMARY

On a day when all home teams won their games, 6 penalties were given, all of which were converted. This far, 34 goals have been scored, a 48% improvement on the 23 goals that had been scored by Match Day 2 last season. The battle for top scorer is shaping up beautifully. Liberty’s teenage sensation Zuberu Fusieni, Edubisase’s youthful striker Emmanuel Baffuor and experienced Frank Osei of Mighty Jets were all on target for the second time in two weeks. Former goal king contender Nathaniel Asamoah of Kotoko have also joined the race with his first goal of the season.

Ghana Glo Premier League Match Day 2 Preview: Kotoko Looking to Silence Noisy Neighbours

KOTOKO – ASHANTIGOLD

Easily my game of the week! Kotoko-AsahntiGold games are played more for pride than points. Kokoto have always sought to silence their noisy neighbours who are hard to suppress. Kotoko plays well these days. One can be sure that either Nathaniel Asamoah, Daniel Nii Adjei or Ahmed Toure will be on target. . On the side of AshantiGold, Ivorian Didier Kore and Mohammed Yakubu are not as prolific as the ‘Aboa Kesse’ family would expect of them. If crowd violence does not mar the beauty of the game, I expect a fiery first half dominated by Kotoko and a second half mainly played by AshantiGold. Kotoko are clear favourites. But many personal battles can be expected; top of which will be the Ivorian clash – Didier Kore vs Ahmed Toure.

ADUANA – MEDEAMA

Both clubs dropped valuable points last week and will be hoping to win some points this week. Last season when they met at this venue [Agyeman Badu Park], it was Aduana’s Daniel Darkwa who scored the only goal. Aduana are clear favourites for this game. Medeama will travel to Dormaa without their coach Bashir Hayford who has been asked to proceed on leave and may lose his job subsequently. There is however enough depth at Medeama to mount a face-saving challenge. Hans Kwofie, Jacob Asiedu and Louis Agyemag all have enough attacking potency to surprise Aduana’s king of the post Stephen Adam.

HEARTS OF OAK – MIGHTY JETS

After a spirited 1-1 draw against defending champions Berekum Chelsea least week, Mighty Jets have won enough respect for themselves. Jets will rely on the experience of Frank Osei and Winfred Dormon to mount a credible challenge. As for Accra Hearts of Oak, they will hope to find their cohesion and attacking bite this week. The last time the two sides met at Accra Sports Stadium, Hearts of Oak were 2-1 winners. Abraham Annan and Uriah Asante scored for Hearts, while Winfred Dormon got a consolation. On current form, the two sides appear to be evenly matched. A draw will not come as a surprise.

WASSAMAN UTD – BEREKUM ARSENALS

Although Wassaman could not withstand the might of Heart of Lions last week,  the may be able to overcome Berekum Arsenals who have not been playing well this season. If Wassaman should win however, I expect a narrow margin. It is hard to see Berekum Arsenal going home with more than one point.

EDUBIASE – HEART OF LIONS

At the Adu Gyamfi Park in Bekwai, New Edubiase FC are virtually unbeatable. Last season, they lost only once on home grounds, scoring 20 goals and conceding 10. The last time both sides met at Bekwai, Alhassan Nuhu and Emmanuel Baffoe were on target for Edubiase with Gladson Awako scoring a consolation goal. Edubiase have got to be favourites for this match. Even though they appear to be missing goalkeeper Collins Addo, who has moved to Berekum Chelsea, striker Emmanuel Baffoe’s form should be enough to win them the game.

DWARFS – BECHEM UTD

During the pre-season, it was clear to me that Dwarfs is a team that will struggle this season. It came as a big surprise when they traveled to Obuasi to get a draw against AshantiGold SC. The Dwarfs strikers are wasteful and may not be able to score more than two goals against Bechem Utd. What they lack in defense, Bechem they make up in attack. They may have lost to Edubiase last week, but we cannot ignore the fact that they were the only home side to score more than one goal. I expect a Bechem to trouble Dwarfs and likely steal a win. Dwarfs may however force a draw if forwards like Nicholas Gyan, Seidu Bancy and Bismark Asiedu will reduce their wastefulness in front of goal.

WA ALL STARS – TEMA YOUTH

Back from relegation, Tema Youth will test the strength of their new-found confidence after they were able to hold giants Kotoko to a 1-1 draw last week. Their egos are however likely to be sorely deflated by the in-form Wa All Stars. Frank Sarfo Gyamfi, Frank Sowah Nortey, Adinan Saeed and Joshua Otoo of Wa All Stars may prove too powerful in attack for Tema Youth’s unsung hero; goalkeeper Joseph Halm. I expect an easy victory for Wa All Stars even though Tema Youth will have enough material to mount a decent challenge

BEREKUM CHELSEA – LIBERTY PROS.

Liberty were the best away performers last season; losing only 5 times on the road. Last season when Liberty went to Berekum, the league champions proved too strong for them. Emmanuel Clottey and Mohammed Abdul Basit were on target for Berekum Chelsea with no response from Liberty. A similar fate awaits Liberty this week at Berekum. Chelsea have spent too much money this season and will be desperate to prove a point. Liberty are going to really struggle to contain the league champions. I am predicting Berekum Chelsea to win this game by a big margin.

Ghana Glo Premier League: Match Day 1 Results and Summary Statistics

[1] MATCH DAY 1 SUMMARY

Tema Youth was the only promoted side which did not record a defeat on Match Day 1. Wassaman Utd , were given a 1-0 fire baptism by much experienced Heart of Lions. At the Babayara Stadium, debutants Bechem Utd put up a spirited fight against Edubiase FC. The Bechem-based team were however too inexperienced for Edubiase who stole a very important away win. Edubiase forward Emmanuel Baffoe was the king of the day; recording the season’s first hattrick. Hearts of Oak’s Mahatma Otoo goes on record as the first goal scorer of the season.

MONDAY MORNING EXPERT: GLO (GHANA) PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH DAY 17 IN FIGURES

MATCH DAY HIGHLIGHTS

LENCLAY, OBUASI. Referee E.N Biney had to call of the game due to security reasons. AshantiGold and Edubiase who represent the same geographical area on Ghana’s map have not hidden the height to which they intend to take this local rivalry. New Edubiase and AshantiGold officials are blaming each other for the volatile state of security.

BABAYARA, KUMASI. Nathaniel Asamoah (Kotoko) continued with his new found scoring form. This time, Cape Coast based Mysterious Dwarfs were the victims of his well-taken goals. But the revelation of the day was Kotoko’s right full back Yaw Frimpong, whose defensive skills and forward runs, delighted the crowd.

GOLDEN CITY, BEREKUM. In what was an emotionally charged game, to be remembered more for exchange of bad tackles, attacks on referee S. Mordey and time wasting antics of Hearts of Oak players than for the beauty of the game, it was the battle between Hearts of Oak defender Godwin Osei Bonsu and Berekum Arsenals poacher Nana Poku which stole the show.

TAMALA SPORTS STADIUM. It looks like Gargo Mohammed has discovered the alchemy which will bring gold to Tamale. Sumaila Nyanya joined Loius Agyemang and Nathaniel Asamoah in the league of domestic strikers on a riot, as he  grabbed a deserved equalizer against visiting King Faisal.

WA PARK. Visiting Kessben (Medeama) put up a good fight against home sides All Stars. It was a beautiful save of Frank Sarfo Gyamfi’s goal-bound shot by Kessben (Medeama SC) goal keeper Mozart Adjetey in the 48th minute which would be talked about. But Frank Sarfo Gyamfi will have his pound of flesh with a 40 yard screamer to save All Stars from another home defeat.

CARL REINDORF. Emmanuel Clottey came from the bench to score for league leaders Berekum Chelsea. Clottey scored from a well taken free kick, his second free kick goal of the season. Goalkeeper Ernest Sowah however stole the show with some nice saves.
