Ghana Glo Premier League: Match Day 3 Summary and Statistics

 [1] MATCH DAY 3 SUMMARY

This week, it was Bechem Utd who sought to spoil the mounting joy of Asante Kotoko, but it was not to be as Ivorian import Ahmed Toure scored what may be the most important brace of the season.

So far, of the 24 games played, 558.3% have resulted in home wins. 20.8% of the games have been won away with an equal proportion resulting in draws. New Edubiase striker Emmanuel Baffuor added a goal to his tally this week. He now leads the goal king chart with 5 goals in 3 games. Asante Kotoko have moved to the top of the league table with 7 points while Bechem Utd languish at the bottom with no points.

Defending champions Berekum Chelsea, Tema Youth, Liberty and Wassaman have failed to score in 2 of the 3 games played so far. Kotoko has the best attack; scoring 2.3 goals per game. Kotoko also lead in goal supremacy (i.e goal difference per game) with an average goal surplus of 1.3 per game. Aduana and Hearts of Oak have the best defense so far; conceding only once this season. Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko, Berekum Chelsea and Dwarfs have not lost a game this season, while Bechem Utd have not won a single game so far.

Ghana Glo Premier League: Match Day 2 Summary and Statistics

[1] MATCH DAY 2 SUMMARY

On a day when all home teams won their games, 6 penalties were given, all of which were converted. This far, 34 goals have been scored, a 48% improvement on the 23 goals that had been scored by Match Day 2 last season. The battle for top scorer is shaping up beautifully. Liberty’s teenage sensation Zuberu Fusieni, Edubisase’s youthful striker Emmanuel Baffuor and experienced Frank Osei of Mighty Jets were all on target for the second time in two weeks. Former goal king contender Nathaniel Asamoah of Kotoko have also joined the race with his first goal of the season.

Ghana Glo Premier League Match Day 2 Preview: Kotoko Looking to Silence Noisy Neighbours

KOTOKO – ASHANTIGOLD

Easily my game of the week! Kotoko-AsahntiGold games are played more for pride than points. Kokoto have always sought to silence their noisy neighbours who are hard to suppress. Kotoko plays well these days. One can be sure that either Nathaniel Asamoah, Daniel Nii Adjei or Ahmed Toure will be on target. . On the side of AshantiGold, Ivorian Didier Kore and Mohammed Yakubu are not as prolific as the ‘Aboa Kesse’ family would expect of them. If crowd violence does not mar the beauty of the game, I expect a fiery first half dominated by Kotoko and a second half mainly played by AshantiGold. Kotoko are clear favourites. But many personal battles can be expected; top of which will be the Ivorian clash – Didier Kore vs Ahmed Toure.

ADUANA – MEDEAMA

Both clubs dropped valuable points last week and will be hoping to win some points this week. Last season when they met at this venue [Agyeman Badu Park], it was Aduana’s Daniel Darkwa who scored the only goal. Aduana are clear favourites for this game. Medeama will travel to Dormaa without their coach Bashir Hayford who has been asked to proceed on leave and may lose his job subsequently. There is however enough depth at Medeama to mount a face-saving challenge. Hans Kwofie, Jacob Asiedu and Louis Agyemag all have enough attacking potency to surprise Aduana’s king of the post Stephen Adam.

HEARTS OF OAK – MIGHTY JETS

After a spirited 1-1 draw against defending champions Berekum Chelsea least week, Mighty Jets have won enough respect for themselves. Jets will rely on the experience of Frank Osei and Winfred Dormon to mount a credible challenge. As for Accra Hearts of Oak, they will hope to find their cohesion and attacking bite this week. The last time the two sides met at Accra Sports Stadium, Hearts of Oak were 2-1 winners. Abraham Annan and Uriah Asante scored for Hearts, while Winfred Dormon got a consolation. On current form, the two sides appear to be evenly matched. A draw will not come as a surprise.

WASSAMAN UTD – BEREKUM ARSENALS

Although Wassaman could not withstand the might of Heart of Lions last week,  the may be able to overcome Berekum Arsenals who have not been playing well this season. If Wassaman should win however, I expect a narrow margin. It is hard to see Berekum Arsenal going home with more than one point.

EDUBIASE – HEART OF LIONS

At the Adu Gyamfi Park in Bekwai, New Edubiase FC are virtually unbeatable. Last season, they lost only once on home grounds, scoring 20 goals and conceding 10. The last time both sides met at Bekwai, Alhassan Nuhu and Emmanuel Baffoe were on target for Edubiase with Gladson Awako scoring a consolation goal. Edubiase have got to be favourites for this match. Even though they appear to be missing goalkeeper Collins Addo, who has moved to Berekum Chelsea, striker Emmanuel Baffoe’s form should be enough to win them the game.

DWARFS – BECHEM UTD

During the pre-season, it was clear to me that Dwarfs is a team that will struggle this season. It came as a big surprise when they traveled to Obuasi to get a draw against AshantiGold SC. The Dwarfs strikers are wasteful and may not be able to score more than two goals against Bechem Utd. What they lack in defense, Bechem they make up in attack. They may have lost to Edubiase last week, but we cannot ignore the fact that they were the only home side to score more than one goal. I expect a Bechem to trouble Dwarfs and likely steal a win. Dwarfs may however force a draw if forwards like Nicholas Gyan, Seidu Bancy and Bismark Asiedu will reduce their wastefulness in front of goal.

WA ALL STARS – TEMA YOUTH

Back from relegation, Tema Youth will test the strength of their new-found confidence after they were able to hold giants Kotoko to a 1-1 draw last week. Their egos are however likely to be sorely deflated by the in-form Wa All Stars. Frank Sarfo Gyamfi, Frank Sowah Nortey, Adinan Saeed and Joshua Otoo of Wa All Stars may prove too powerful in attack for Tema Youth’s unsung hero; goalkeeper Joseph Halm. I expect an easy victory for Wa All Stars even though Tema Youth will have enough material to mount a decent challenge

BEREKUM CHELSEA – LIBERTY PROS.

Liberty were the best away performers last season; losing only 5 times on the road. Last season when Liberty went to Berekum, the league champions proved too strong for them. Emmanuel Clottey and Mohammed Abdul Basit were on target for Berekum Chelsea with no response from Liberty. A similar fate awaits Liberty this week at Berekum. Chelsea have spent too much money this season and will be desperate to prove a point. Liberty are going to really struggle to contain the league champions. I am predicting Berekum Chelsea to win this game by a big margin.

Ghana Glo Premier League: Match Day 1 Results and Summary Statistics

[1] MATCH DAY 1 SUMMARY

Tema Youth was the only promoted side which did not record a defeat on Match Day 1. Wassaman Utd , were given a 1-0 fire baptism by much experienced Heart of Lions. At the Babayara Stadium, debutants Bechem Utd put up a spirited fight against Edubiase FC. The Bechem-based team were however too inexperienced for Edubiase who stole a very important away win. Edubiase forward Emmanuel Baffoe was the king of the day; recording the season’s first hattrick. Hearts of Oak’s Mahatma Otoo goes on record as the first goal scorer of the season.

Glo Premier League: Round 17 results and some interviews

DORMAA: Aduana Stars 10 Eleven Wise

HERBERT ADDO (Coach of Aduana Stars)

“Eleven Wise had a bad defensive set-up. We broke them down easily. This led to complacency which almost cost us the win. I think some of my players are not serious so beginning from this weak I will bring some serious changes in he team.”

“I want to win one game after the other. Next week, we come up against Olympics in Accra. I am going to map up a good strategy to win that game.”

“Coaching is a crazy job. We have a 17 games unbeaten run, yet when I lose just one game, fans will call for my head. So I am focused, I want to win my next game.” Continue reading ‘Glo Premier League: Round 17 results and some interviews’

Aduana Stars – Another Flash in the Pan?

At the end of 2008/2009 season, several experts of the game unanimously believed it might not take long for the Hearts-Kotoko hegemony to collapse. Half way through this season,  indications are clear that this might just be the year for new kings of the Glo Premier League. The ever-burning flames from Dormaa Ahenkro, Aduana Stars might just steal the show this year.

At the end of the first half of the season, the league newbies had exceeded all expectations and had jumped ahead of the pack.  Aduana Stars finished the season undefeated at home. Even though they had the weakest attack (scoring  only 10 goals), they were the best defensive team, conceding only 5 goals.

All Stars, Hearts of Oak and Kessben FC are hot on their trail, but it is refreshing to witness a newly promoted club wrestle with the greats. The rise and rise of Aduana Stars is not happening by default. There is a good balance of managerial acumen, superior bench, team depth and die-hard support which is pushing the tem to the summit.

It appears that the strong leadership from Mr. Kingley Osie-Bonsu, Takyi Arhin, George Gyau and the rest of the men behind the Flames of Dormaa is a major contribution to the solid performance of the team. Setting out to finish among the Top 4, these men have walked their talk; providing the team every support they need to succeed. At the start of the season, the vowed not to lose at home this season. So far, so very good. Continue reading ‘Aduana Stars – Another Flash in the Pan?’

Glo Premier League 2009/2010: Round 2 Review

4002860027_d7548eccd2_oTitle holders Accra Hearts of Oak sit at the bottom of the table with no point, no goal and four goals against at the end of Round 2 of the Glo Premier League. Meanwhile, Kessben FC have ascended to the summit of the league table having won two games on a row. On the goal king front, 2008/2009 MVP Joseph Ato-Bissah’s brace against strong side Heart of Lions makes him the leader of the chart. Find details of Round 2 below.

Glo Premier League 09/10 Preview: Round 2

ABRANKESE: Kessben FC-Great Olympics

If you are a lover of beautiful football then this should be the game you are likely to be interested in. Home side Kessben are on a good run, beating King Faisal Babies 1-2 away from home in round 1. They will expect to produce another good result, but Accra Great Olympics are a difficult team to beat.

Players to watch Kessben: Richard Mpong, Prince Attakora Gyima and Bismark Idan

Players to watch Olympics: Muntari Tagoe, Malik Akowua, Eric Adjei

Prediction: Kessben 1:2 Great Olympics

WA PARK: All Stars-Ashanti Gold SC

The Miners come to this game with an unconvincing home win against Bechem Chelsea while the Wa lads produced a spirited away draw down south. Quality wise, I rate All Stars above The Miners and I do not expect them to lose at home. However the Wa lads will have to find a good replacement for suspended Michael Ocansey.

Players to watch All Stars: Daniel Bomfa, Robert Dabuo, Kwame Nsor

Players to watch Ashgold: David Telfar, Fatau Dauda, Daniel Asamoah

Prediction: All Stars 2:0 AshGold

Glo Premier League Preview 2009/2010: Week 1

gloGlo Premier League begins this weekend with some hot encounters. Unless I miss my guess, we are in for some exciting match-ups. Two of the games are regional derbies while there is a game between allies. The two new entrants, Aduana Stars and New Edubiase FC are all on away assignments where they are likely to have a baptism of fire. Find below a game-by-game preview:

OHENE DJAN: Great Olympics – Asante Kotoko

The return of Ghana’s ‘Wonder Club’ Great Olympics couldn’t have come with a more exciting clash. Olympics and Kotoko have been sweet allies in the past. The Kotoko-Oly friendship was perhaps born out of the common spite for Champions Hearts of Oak. However, this friendship must be shoved to the gutters if Olympics are to make clear their determination to avoid relegation. Great Olympics goes into this game with a much more youthful team. Ben Mensah, Bilal Mohammed, Bright Bortey and Eric Adjei will be players to watch out for in coach Dauda Lutterodt’s side.

Taking over from a club that is struggling to find wins, it is going to be interesting to see how Paa Kwasi Fabien will be able to pick from the 48 players available to him to overcome the Great Olympics challenge. Will the inclusion of Baafuor Gyan from FC Saturn in Russia and Kabiru Imoro come as a blessing to the Fabulous lads? Olympics should not mess up with any of the following as they can each produce an ego deflating performance: Kwabea Yaro, Francis Coffie and Stephen Manu (B.A, they call him)

Prediction: Great Olympics 2:1Asante Kotoko Continue reading ‘Glo Premier League Preview 2009/2010: Week 1’
